While James Cameron may have movie theaters abuzz with the 3-D re-release of Titanic, there are other, more…understated musical events happening on both sides of the Atlantic this week to commemmorate the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking on April 15, 1912.
- Today (4/10), the Royal Philharmonic is performing the world premiere of Robin Gibb's – yes, of BeeGee's fame - Titanic Requiem. If you don't happen to be in London, you can still tune into a live webstream of the concert by clicking here; the Requiem starts around 4pm EDT.
- This Sunday – on the actual centennial – the Wordless Music Orchestra offers two performances of Gavin Bryars' The Sinking of the Titanic at LPR, at both 6:30 and 9:30. Tickets are $30 and available online.
- For a more authentic – and possibly uneasy – experience, NYC's own floating concert hall, Bargemusic, will host a concert this Sunday at 3pm by the Amphion String Quartet, with music by Haydn, Shostakovich and Debussy. Hopefully, they won't have to play "Nearer My God to Thee," like they do in the movie. Tickets are $35; reservations available by emailing reserve@bargemusic.org.
