This Week: Lang Lang plays Bartok with the NY Philharmonic

"Bartok's #2 is probably the single-most difficult piece that I have ever played. I usually end up with a keyboard covered by blood."       – András Schiff (via Carnegie Hall)

I can't say I'm honestly the biggest fan of pianist Lang Lang, who often seems to put showmanship ahead of his admittedly-stunning musicianship. But when I heard that he's in town this week to play Bartok's 2nd concerto with Alan Gilbert and the NY Phil, I jumped for a ticket. This is serious, challenging music, and would seem to indicate a step up in his growth as a musician (vs., say, another Rach 3 or Rhapsody in Blue.)

Also on the bold, diverse program are Magnus Lindberg's Feria (1997) and Prokofiev's 5th Symphony. Tickets are still available online

  1. I went tonight, and was amazed. He really played the hell out of it. Loved Feria before it too.
