Monkey See, Monkey Listen

DSC06871

Williamsburg is not lacking for musical venues, but none are more intimate – or interesting – than Monkeytown, which I visited for the first time last night. The entrance, on an undeveloped stretch of N. 3rd St., is nondescript, and the front is all quiet bar/restaurant. Appearing a bit lost, the bartender asked me if I was there for the show, collected $5, and told me to walk down an orange hallway towards the back. There, low-slung seats and set tables ringed the perimeter, with video projections filling all four walls of the otherwise-raw space. The center was given over to a series of improv bands, including Carlos' Red Shoes, who played guitar, drums and tuba (yes, tuba), and The Glass Bees, who mixed MacBooks, guitars and cellos. If all that weren't enough, they have hands down the best food of any experimental/new music venue I've ever visited: try the Elk or Ostrich sliders ($4). Yum. (More pics below.)
