So, I didn't end up making it to Electric Zoo this weekend – thanks to both lack of energy and funds – but a 10-spot did get me in to yesterday's final Mister Sunday of the summer. Overlooking the Gowanus Canal near Carroll Street (once the home of Issue Project Room), the location is basically an industrial sandlot, the crowd a mix of young and not-so-young (Just remember, kids: these 50-somethings paved the way back in the 70's.) It's basically the same low-key, no-drama vibe as Warm Up, without all the cool architecture or MoMA stamp of approval.
Resident DJ's Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter manned the decks, playing a mix of disco and house, both vinyl and digital (mostly vinyl). By the time 7pm rolled around, pretty much the whole place was up and dancing under the white lights and tiny mirror ball, strung on a wire between two birch trees. It felt like a house party in someone's backyard: no frills, just good music and community. Can't wait til next year.
