Too Much

That ondes Martenot in Boston had nothing on the unholy din unleashed at Music Hall of Williamsburg Wednesday night. Local trio Growing – veterans of numerous Todd P shows – plays experimental rock, driven by a pair of guitars and a battery of tabletop noiseboxes. Going in, I was optimistic they were going to resemble new faves High Places, but the reality was more like being repeatedly struck in the head by a blunt object. Other than making my ears bleed, there just wasn't any point to it.

The loudness continued with Japanese metal vets Boris, who sounded like they learned to play from countless nights singing Karaoke. It wasn't bad, though as the dude standing next to me said, "They're better when they stop singing." Eventually, though, they wore out their welcome with an overlong set that continued even as the houselights came up. Sorry guys, not on a Wednesday. (More pics below.)

  1. those are some great pix, pete!…esp. the boris shots!
i think i enjoyed the boris show more than you. they definitely played too long, but i was into them for most of the gig. if they learned by the karaoke method, their machine was permanently stuck on the melvins. some of boris’ riffs are lifted straight from the melvins, but i guess we’re supposed to be prepared for that based on the fact that they named themselves after an early melvins tune.
a co-worker and i r going to c don caballero monday night at a club called europa in brooklyn. don cab are kind of a post-rock, math-rock, mostly instrumental band from pittsburgh. tix are $12. i’ll probably buy at the door. lemme know if you’re interested.
