A Night at Dizzy’s

It's not every day that you get to hear the world's greatest vibes player and the world's most celebrated jazz organist on the same stage, but that's exactly who I saw Wednesday night at Dizzy's (insert corporate beverage sponsor name here.) Bobby Hutcherson and  Joey DeFrancesco performed an elegant, transfixing set that ranged from slow ballads to hard bop. Hutcherson was the classy, whimsical bandleader, while DeFrancesco – a larger-than-life figure who Miles Davis picked to play with his band when he was just 17 – seemed completely tranced-out during his solos, swaying and shouting to himself just like his mentor, the great Jimmy Smith. Playing with them were guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Byron Landham, both superb soloists in their own right. They'll all be there through Sunday, if you've got the time and cash.
