I got to the Whitney last night in the middle of Javelin's set, who were performing downstairs as part of the free Friday Whitney Live series, which coincides with the museum's Friday night pay-what-you-wish admission policy. The cafe was jammed, so I looked down on the show from the sidewalk.
After, I made my way to the Christian Marclay exhibit on the 5th floor, where I ended up just missing Dither and Elliott Sharp perform Marclay's Graffiti Composition, where the players improvise on random images placed on their music stands. James and Taylor both told me it was pretty rad, but c'mon Whitney – couldn't you have scheduled them during the break between sets?
Finally, I made my way back downstairs to catch the amazing all-girl outfit Warpaint, who weaved psychedelic vocals with intricate guitar lines that had the whole crowd up and dancing. Just one more piece of evidence that L.A. is kicking out some of the U.S.'s greatest jams right now.
