Flying home from Austin now, after a breakfast of migas with my brother and his family. Driving to the airport, I heard WFUV music director Rita Houston interviewed from Zilker Park on local station KGSR, talking about how much she loves coming down to Austin twice each year. (The other time, of course, is in March for SXSW.)
I was immediately jealous of her, wishing I had the kind of job that would actively discourage me from showing up in the office tomorrow morning. Especially since today’s lineup is arguably the best of the lot. Fantasy day schedule: Yo La Tengo, The National, Robert Earl Keen, DeVotchKa, Lucinda Williams, Regina Spektor, Wilco, The Decemberists, and Austin’s own Ghostland Observatory. For those in front of a computer, you can watch the live stream at: attblueroom.com/music; here’s hoping I make it home in time to catch the tail end of Bob Dylan’s festival-closing set.
Postscript: To paraphrase the opening line from my all-time favorite TV program The Gong Show: "From Austin! Almost Live!" Not sure if Dylan refused to give up digital rights or what, but the AT&T Blueroom showed Saturday night’s Arcade Fire show during Dylan’s set. Just as well: the A/F were the one band I really missed not seeing on Saturday, and they rocked the park, benefiting from The White Stripes eleventh hour flake-out.
