Among the many casualties when City Opera folded last year was their contemporary-opera lab VOX: an essential incubator for emerging composers that presented some 70-odd operas over 14 seasons. Fortunately, Beth Morrison and HERE—both veteran presenters of opera/music-theater—stepped to fill in the gap last year with PROTOTYPE, featuring post-classical multimedia works by composers such as Mohammed Fairouz and David T. Little, whose adrenaline-pumping production of Soldier Songs,"proved that small forces can create hefty explosions."
PROTOTYPE returns for its second year this week with an expanded program featuring new works by Kamala Sankaram, Gregory Spears, Jonathan Berger, Lina Lapelyte, Du Yun, and Kyle Jarrow. In addition, there will be post-show conversations, lounges, and one-off cabaret performances. Information on tickets—including discount "Proto Packs"—and show details available here.
