As the media cuts Justin to pieces for his somewhat-reluctant acceptance speech last night at the GRAMMYs for Best New Artist, it's instructive to hear what he had to say about it several weeks in advance, in a promotional video on Pandora:
"I've made assumptions of what it might be like, thinking I'm probably wrong about half of them, right about half of them. But, I'm still apprehensive about winning something. I don't want anybody to believe that it's going to give accolade to your spirit, and why we made the music in the first place. It's about wanting to share music, and if it helps share music, great."
Point being: the GRAMMYs can be more than just a popularity contest. For all of GRAMMY's issues, they do help introduce genuinely good music to folks who might never hear it otherwise. And, the judges do tend to get it right in the end, at least when it comes to the big awards.
