I guess one of the privileges of being a mainstream music critic is that you get to work out your fantasies on your company's dime. Case in point: NY Magazine's Justin Davidson got to sit in on Alan Gilbert's conducting masterclass at Juilliard late last year, and wrote about the experience. The results – as you can see in the above video – are pretty horrific. (Note how Gilbert – who clearly has better things to do – politely dresses Davidson down for losing focus at 1:15.) Not to mention, I don't really know what the point of the exercise was, other than to show that conducting isn't as easy as it looks. And that critics shouldn't quit their day jobs.
