For fans of indie music, Brooklyn's Northside Festival has always been the scruffy little sister to CMJ, filling the clubs of Greenpoint and Williamsburg each June with a woolly mix of bands whose half-lives are shorter than macarons. But now, it its sixth year, the Northside Festival is stepping things up in a big way, with marquee acts CHVRCHES, Beirut, The War on Drugs, Thee Oh Sees, Sharon Van Etten, Talib Kweli, Titus Andronicus, and Omar Souleyman, among many others.
In all there will be some 400 bands playing 100+ shows from Thursday to Sunday—not to mention parallel SXSW-style conferences devoted to Film and "Innovation." With the weather much fairer than it tends to be around here in October, Northside might just become NYC's go-to festival one of these days.
