Charles McPherson – alto saxophone Steve Davis – trombone Jeb Patton – piano Boris Kozlov – bass Kenny Washington – drums
No jazz musician of the past 60 years has more palpably channeled the sound of Charlie Parker than alto saxophonist Charles McPherson.”
– JazzizAlto saxophonist and bebop legend Charles McPherson leads a hard-swinging quintet with special guests Steve Davis on trombone and Kenny Washington on drums alongside pianist Jeb Patton and bassist Boris Kozlov. One of the most acclaimed and beloved voices in jazz, McPherson’s rich musical style is rooted in the blues and bebop and has influenced and inspired generations of musicians and listeners for over six decades. He has performed at concerts and festivals around the world with jazz greats like Barry Harris, Billy Eckstine, Nat Adderley, Jay McShann, Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, and others. In a recent review, Downbeat states, “As a still-vibrant jazz veteran with ties to innovators like Charles Mingus and Lionel Hampton, McPherson’s writing carries on the traditional weight of bebop and swing, buoyed with an inventive, contemporary spark.” Paris Move writes of his recent acclaimed album, Reverence “If you love jazz, this album is already a legend.” Read Less

Brahms Requiem
Brahms Requiem
03/11/2026 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Trinity Church, 89 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, USA
Johannes Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem is one of the most profound choral masterworks ever composed. In this performance by Downtown Voices, NOVUS, and soloists Moriah Berry (a former Trinity Choral Scholar) and Brian Mextorf (Trinity Choir), Brahms’s setting of biblical texts unfolds in waves of grief and consolation, embodied in expressive orchestration and choral melodies. Unlike traditional requiems, Brahms’s masterpiece is not a mass for the dead but rather a work for the living, offering reassurance and solace.
Stephen Sands, conductor

To mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, Gustavo Dudamel — the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music & Artistic Director Designate — leads the World Premiere of a new orchestration of Frederic Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated. Featuring orchestrations created by composers representing the dynamism of the American musical landscape, the work centers a Chilean protest anthem as a hymn to the power of communities to effect social change. The People United… echoes the defiant spirit of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, which opens the program.
