The Met Rocks

OneginAfter performances like today’s Onegin at the Met (which I heard on 96.3FM) I almost feel I should retract my last post (almost). Renée Fleming, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Ramón Vargas absolutely brought the house down, and the Met Orchestra, working under Gergiev, flew through the score. The opera’s conclusion – a duet between Tatiana (Fleming) and Onegin (Hvorostovsky) – was delivered with such deliberate force, I could literally feel the hair rise on the back of my neck. The sold-out house screamed their approval when Fleming and Hvorostovsky made their curtain calls. Wow.

I’d be curious to hear if anyone might have caught the HD simulcast of today’s performance, one of six this season. The UA Theater at Union Square is the only theater in NYC that offers it, and I’m planning to go there for Barber of Seville on 3/24. You can find out more about the simulcasts on the Met’s website. (I realize it may seem odd to see a Met performance at an NYC movie theater, but I’ve heard really good things about it. Anyway, I bet it beats standing room.)

  1. Yeah, I was there at the showing in Union Square. I’ll be there for Barber of Seville also. I recommend getting to the theater at 5 of 1 or before if you want a good pick of seats.
I had seen Onegin two fridays ago at the season premiere, and was a bit underwhelmed then, possibly because I was tired, and possibly because I had seen Jenufa the week before, though most likely it was the fact that I was sitting in the last row of the family circle and couldn’t really see much of anything on the stage.
Seeing it at the movies was better. It’s still not among my favorite operas though it definitely has its moments. I think the performance today was probably better than the one I saw. I was definitely more into it at least.
Oh yeah, it definitely beats standing room. I tried standing room for die zauberflote last month and even though I liked the performance, it wasn’t worth the pain in my feet.
Anwway, I like your blog, keep it up!

  7. I saw Onegin in the house a week ago after the incendiary Jenufa matinee. I love the opera and like both Fleming and Hvorostovsky very much–still, I was knocked sideways by their intensity and vocal beauty. I’ve been extremely lucky in my Onegin casts over the years in New York and elsewhere, but this revival is the finest I’ve ever encountered.
As a professional set and lighting designer, I also love this production–the total but poetic simplicity suits the opera to perfection.

  13. I live in Minneapolis…I drove north of town in a snow storm to reach the movie theater. It was my 4th visit to see the HDTV broadcast from the Met. It is so popular here that ONEGIN was shown in two theaters. The first time this has happened.
I thought ONEGIN was fantastic. Maybe a tad too many close close up’s…but what a great joy to see and hear.
After the opera my car was covered in about 8″ of snow…very windy and drifting.

  19. Oh yeah, I live in MD and I saw the Onegin broadcast in the theater and got blow away. So I rashly decided to go for the 3/3 last performance. Drove up to NY friday night slept 2 hours and was at the standing room line at 6:30. So worth it! It was the best opera performance I have been to.
