I’ve got one final concert on this week-long musical escapade: Messiaen’s “From the Canyons to the Stars,” with Salonen conducting. In his pre-performance comments, composer-in-residence Stephen Stucky was full of praise for this ecstatic 90 minute composition, written in 1974 for the U.S. bicentennial. “You will arrive at the piece’s conclusion exhausted and exhilarated.” Not too exhausted, I hope: I’m going to have to make a mad dash out of here if I’m going to catch my 11:15 red eye back to New York. Wish me luck.
