Pop Fizz

Critic Greg Sandow recently posted a curious and thoughtful piece on his blog which delineates the differences between classical and pop music reviews. Whatever dimwit wrote, “Pop music criticism is crap” got it exactly backwards, with one major exception.

Question: why aren’t more people writing both? And, why the compartmentalization anyway?

  1. Classical music listeners tend to come from the pop world so they understand both. Pop music listeners tend not to come from the classical world so they don’t understand both.
Different music attracts different people. A Classical and Blues audience is different. A Metal and Rap audience is different. Are there exceptions to this? Is there crossover? Yes of course, but the majority of people tend to gravitate towards certain kinds of music (and shows) with little deviation. They tend to identify with certain music and the culture it represents.
They also don’t think about it.
Your blog is lovely and well written – thank you.
