Playing In The Rain

Image001 The rains came early for tonight's Wordless Music show at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, falling throughout the Renaissance choral works by Perotin and the first half of Manuel Gottsching's hour-long techno piece E2-E4. No word yet on whether or not they'll be able to perform Rhys Chatham's A Crimson Grail for 200 guitars, but there are a lot of folks here carrying axes who hope they do.

Postscript: Lincoln Center did not permit the performance of A Crimson Grail, saying the amps and other equipment – which were lined up along both sides of the audience - had not had sufficient time to dry out. A huge disappointment for the musicians who had rehearsed all week, and the near-capacity crowd who braved the elements to hear them. Ronen told me afterward that the dress rehearsal (held in the nearby Church of St. Paul the Apostle) was "a total bliss-out," and one of the most astonishing live performances he's ever heard. Damnit.

More pics after the jump.

  1. those guitarists should be compensated – they had to drag their amps and guitars all week to rehearsals and to that gig (which should have been cancelled anyway).
Then, to actually put on the show and not include them in the end was downright shameful. Noone thought to have a rain date for this? ridiculous and dumb. F-

  7. I was one of the 200 guitar players. We all had a great time and very grateful to have been part of such a wonderful piece of music. It was a social event for the ages. I’m am very proud of what we did even if we did not get to perform it in front of 5,000 people.

  13. one of the 200+ guitarists

*to anon 9:32pm: Were you one of those guitarists? Do you have a clue what actually went on during the week leading up to Friday, and the months leading up to last week? Do you have any comprehension of the logistics involved in getting 200 musicians coordinated for an event like this? Or of the number of people involved in the guitar orchestra who had flown in and would not be available for a “rain date”?
To everyone else: I’ve heard it’s already being talked about that this event will be staged next year, and it will certainly involve as many of the same musicians as are willing to participate, and will have absolutely zero risk of being rained out. So, sit tight.
