Day 2 at CMJ starts at Mercury Lounge, where Fujiya & Miyagi and Walter Meego are playing later tonight. For now, though, it's Danish outfit WhoMadeWho, who are apparently making their first appearance stateside. They're all over the place, awkwardly asking the crowd to sing along to their inscrutable lyrics, backed by an incessant drum machine beat (does anyone else sense a theme here?) and engaging in weird, formulaic stage antics (they're all dressed in jester costumes). Still, there's something about them that makes me want to give them a pass – maybe its that eccentric European self-assurance, or this dancey bit right now. Or, maybe it's that they're swilling Bud Light like its some exotic export.
