The East Village Opera Company, which amplifies traditional arias with rock instrumentation, brought their act to the Joyce Theater last night for the world premiere of Remember Me: an evening-length work presented in collaboration with Parsons Dance. At first, I had a hard time embracing the music – which sounds more like Celine Dion than Cecilia Bartoli – but was won over by the kinetic, often suggestive choreography (esp. the sultry lead dancer Abby Silva.) Singers Tyley Ross and AnneMarie Milazzo were helped out by evocative projections and light design, resulting in some genuinely intense moments.
Remember Me continues at the Joyce through January 18; tickets available at the box office.
