A New Master

DSC00410I showed up over an hour late to tonight's Yevgeny Sudbin recital at the People's Symphony, and had to sneak in the back just to catch the final piece on the program: Prokofiev's war-fueled 7th Sonata. (I wish I had a photo of the grey lady who shot me a look of astonished disapproval when I entered through the wrong door.) Fortunately, Sudbin (b. 1980) rewarded the raucous applause with no less than three encores: a Chopin Polonaise, a Mozart fantasy, and something by Scriabin that nearly blew the roof off. Damn, this guy is the real deal: don't be surprised if soon you hear his name muttered alongside his fellow countrymen Kissin and Bronfman (More pics below.)
