Quiet

I've never thought of Arvo Pӓrt as having rock star status, but it was absolutely packed in LPR tonight, where Ronen's Wordless Series hosted a "composer portrait" devoted to the Estonian composer's works. (Impressively, this was the first of two shows.) ACME opened with a trio of works for small ensemble, including the sad, subliminal quartets "Summa" and "Fratres" (both 1977), which washed over the eyes-shut audience like a warm epsom bath. After, the Wordless Music Orchestra performed Pӓrt's Symphony No. 4 "Los Angeles" (2008) that could easily be the soundtrack to a Ron Howard film, filled with harps and chimes that eventually yielded to kettle drums and tom toms. The music was brilliant, but unfortunately the quiet parts (which are many) were often washed out by LPR's ambient noise: a dropped phone, a soda fountain splash, a door opening and shutting. Still, for all the people packed in there like sardines, it was remarkably still. Even meditative. (More pics below.)
