Seaport Snyth

When Black Moth Super Rainbow opened for MGMT at McCarren Pool last summer, their trippy, synth-driven rock proved just the right setup for the indie pop stars. As headliners last night at South Street Seaport, their onstage antics – masks, wigs, Sasquatch suits – felt derivative (Flaming Lips, anyone?) and distracting, compounded by the fact their sound has a numbing consistency. Worst of all, the lead singer – who hid behind a freakish Chinaman mask – was clearly performing to a pre-recorded vocal track. Badly. Whatever kind of artistic statement this was meant to be, I'd much rather just see a band that takes themselves seriously, even if it is the summer. (More pics below.)
