After a day out in the rain at Fun Fun Fun Fest, it was a pleasure to wind down Sunday night at the Elephant Room, Austin's main jazz venue, located in a basement space on Congress Ave. My brother Paul, a local pianist who plays in both latin and traditional jazz ensembles, explained it was a benefit for local sax player Tony Campise, who fell and hit his head during a jazz festival in Corpus Christi last month; it wasn't immediately clear whether or not Campise had insurance. With a vertiable who's-who of local jazz artists on stage – including a pair of talented young singers mentored by Campise - Paul told me he'd never seen the place so crowded.
