I hadn't had the chance to see Knights On Earth before their gig this past Sunday at LPR, despite their monthly residency at Rockwood over the past year. It was worth the wait: falling somewhere between jazz fusion, prog rock and jam band, the quartet killed the packed house, playing through most of their new album move slow, life ends. Fronted by the always-amazing guitarist/vocalist Grey McMurray (of itsnotyouitsme and the David Crowell Ensemble), they also had a secret weapon in Mike Williams, whose bass trumpet/flugelhorn gave them a Bell Orchestre-like sheen. But, just in case any of us missed the point, they surprised us late in their set by bringing out a six piece brass ensemble that sounded dangerously close to Gabriel blowing his final horn. Overpowering and thrilling. (More pics at the Flickr page.)
