Ad Bands

DSC05072So, I try really hard to keep my work life separate from my music-going, but when my friend Jess - who's not in advertising - told me she was playing in last night's Battle of the Ad Bands at Highline, I decided to go check it out. It was pretty much what you'd expect: aging creatives and account execs singing off-key cover songs of Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga, sounding little better than your random Thursday night karaoke session. At least Jess' band, Something Heavy, were entertaining, with lead singer Alan Chapell doing his best Wayne Coyne imitation, dressed all in white while volunteers in bear and bacon costumes jumped around the stage throwing confetti and glitter. Funny that none of the American Idol-style judges seemed to pick up on the reference…(They lost to some alt-country cover band.)

What most of the Mad Men and Women in the room last night probably didn't realize is that there are actual legit musicians who make their living in the ad biz – among them, composer/clarinetist Michael Lowenstern, who, in addition to playing with folks like Todd Reynolds, is a Digital Managing Director at R/GA. Now, that's a showcase I'd like to see.
