Edit: In order to keep the content of FoM frequent and fresh, I've decided to recruit a number of guest authors to help me navigate the wide, deep river music that flows through NYC on any given night. Tonight, guest author Brian brings us this recap of The Kooks, who played two shows at Webster Hall this week. Here's his post:

—————————————————————————With protests erupting on Wall Street, the spirit of the '60s is back in the air. The air of rebellion was only reinforced by the British Invasion that took place for two nights this week at Webster Hall, courtesy of The Kooks: a quartet of retro-rockers from Brighton. Indeed, their presence here wasn't so much of tribute to the British Invasion, as a continuation of it.

The foursome is celebrating the release of their 3rd album, Junk of the Heart by hitting the US circuit.  Stepping onto the stage amidst fog and cheers, Luke Prichard (guitar/vocals) was all smiles to kick off their US tour. A packed ballroom of yuppies, hipsters and students deliriously smiled in return.

Prichard has clearly blossomed as a frontman, dashing about the stage with manic energy.  At times resembling the menacingly charismatic Jim Morrison, he worked the audience and won them over with beautifully crafted songs, even prompting sing-alongs to "Ooh La, Sway" and "Shine On."  A perfect break from the madness came when Prichard stood tall and alone, at the far left of the stage.  In the spotlight he hummed the cult favorite, "Seaside", leaving the audience spellbound.  They showed no signs of quit as they forged ahead with hits off their new album, Junk of the Heart

The Kooks multiple influences were on full display, offering up everything from reggae to straight rock. An intense light show only intensified the impact of the music and kept the crowd going straight through to the encore. They offered up their biggest hit, "Naïve" as they closed the night, with the audience once more joining in.

With their psychedelic performance and elegant accents, it’s safe to say this is one British Invasion that was welcomed with open arms. Yeah, these kids are alright.  Kooks (2)
